At our firm, we understand that not every legal matter requires — or benefits from — full representation by an attorney. Many clients are capable of handling portions, or all, of their case themselves. However, they want to do it with reassurance, strategy, and legal guidance of an experienced attorney along the way. That’s when Limited Scope Advisement and Coaching becomes an excellent option.

What is Limited Scope Advisement & Coaching?

Limited scope services (sometimes called “unbundled legal services”) allow you to hire an attorney for specific tasks rather than having them handle the entire case. Instead of turning everything over to a lawyer, you choose exactly where you need help, such as:

  • Reviewing or drafting legal documents
  • Preparing for a hearing, mediation, or deposition
  • Developing a case strategy
  • Understanding your rights and obligations
  • Coaching on how to speak to the judge or opposing party
  • Identifying what evidence you need and how to organize it

You stay in control of your case. We support you in the background with targeted, professional legal guidance.

How It Differs from Full-Scope Representation or Other Legal Resources/options:

When dealing with a legal issue, there are a number of options people can choose from when seeking professional advisements. Those options are typically as follows:

Free Legal Resources.

These will vary widely depending on your state and county. In Clark County, Washington, for example, there are a couple of helpful free resources in town, such as the Clark County Volunteer Lawyers Program or the Clark County Virtual Legal Clinic. The benefit of these options are that they are free of cost. The downside is limited time allowed and limited resources available to the community.

Self-Representation.

The plus side of this option is that it is free of cost. The downside is that you may be handling a complex legal issue in a complicated legal arena. There is a high likelihood of mistakes being made.

Consult.

This is an excellent and recommended option for almost all legal issues that arise. This is typically a couple of hundred-dollar flat fee for meeting with a lawyer for an hour. They review your matter, provide initial analysis and strategy information, and ultimately provide a recommendation on the best path forward.

Limited Scope Advisement/Coaching.

This option usually hits the sweet spot. You remain self-represented. This means that you will ultimately be running point on your entire legal case, and you will be the one filing documents, appearing in court, etc. However, in the background you have a lawyer providing strategic, behind-the-scenes support on the portions of your legal matter you choose.

Full Scope Representation.

This is the most comprehensive legal help you can get. With full representation, your attorney handles every aspect of the case — communicating with the court, drafting filings, negotiating with the other side, appearing at all court hearings, etc.

CAUTION: Be wary of anyone advertising as a stand-alone “divorce coach”/paralegal who is not a licensed attorney. They are not authorized to practice law, and they can often cross boundaries of allowable advisement which may lead to disastrous results (unfortunately, we have seen it so many times after major issues occur). It is always best to work with a lawyer within the scope of service that works for you to ensure that you are getting proper legal advice on very serious matters. With limited scope coaching services from a lawyer, you can get just the right amount of assistance that works for you and your budget.

Why Many Clients Prefer Limited Scope Services

1. Cost-Effective Without Sacrificing Quality

Legal fees can add up quickly in traditional/full scope representation. Limited-scope coaching from a lawyer lets you pay only for the services you truly need. You get to work with the same lawyer throughout your entire matter, so they know your case and your needs. Many clients appreciate the predictability and affordability of this option.

2. Stay in Control of Your Case

Some clients prefer to be hands-on. Limited scope is ideal if you want to manage your own matter but still value expert guidance to avoid costly mistakes.

3. Keeping Tensions Low Between Parties

Oftentimes, when you are dealing with a legal issue and the other side hears that you have “hired a lawyer” or they heard that you “lawyered up”, it causes instant polarization and tension. When you work with a lawyer in a limited scope capacity, they are only coaching you in the background and the other party is not notified of their involvement. That helps to ensure the conversation remains just between the two parties and no one puts their guard up unnecessarily.

4. Ideal for Straightforward Issues or Smaller Budgets

Not every matter calls for the full machinery of litigation. For many hearings, motions, or procedural steps, a client can handle the “heavy lifting” with the right coaching from the sideline.

5. Flexible and Customizable

You can scale up or down depending on how your case evolves. There may be periods in your legal matter where you need more or less coaching. No problem, we flex with you. Also, if things become overwhelming, there is always the option of upgrading to full scope representation at any time if limited scope coaching wasn’t enough.

6. Reduces Stress Through Professional Support

Even if you’re representing yourself, you don’t have to feel alone. Preparing with an attorney helps you feel confident and ready.

Who Benefits Most from Limited Scope Advisement?

This approach works especially well for clients who:

  • Are comfortable speaking in court
  • Have relatively organized facts and documents
  • Want to keep legal costs predictable
  • Prefer to stay involved in their case
  • Need “as-needed” access to legal knowledge
